Social Media in Learning Environments (SMILES) Vol #2: Reddit

I have finished my second month on Reddit and I already feel like a part of the “Turkishlearning” subreddit. As a person who knows English and Turkish, I can always take action when a question that is asked on the platform couldn’t be answered by the other members of the community. However, most of the posts get around 10 comments from various people most of which are native Turkish speakers. There are also Turkish teachers who use the platform actively and help users with no expectations. I created my first entry in the community that asked to brainstorm a verb and its usage of it in Turkish. ( https://www.reddit.com/r/turkish/comments/12psyap/rica_etmek_beyin_f%C4%B1rt%C4%B1nas%C4%B1/ )

In the post, I asked the other Turkish teachers about their opinion on a certain sentence that I heard from my Turkish professor a few days ago which sounded very unnatural and ungrammatical. But as language is like a living creature and it can change over time, I decided to ask other Turkish speakers and Turkish teachers. Most of the comments were supporting my claim but there were still some comments that found the sentence grammatically correct. At some point, two members of the community had a dispute about how the Turkish language lost all its value after the alphabet was changed to Latin characters. I like to see comments and discussions that are made under a post created by me. It really motivates me to be more productive in the community. One another factor that motivates me is the “upvote” function. Just like the “like and dislike” buttons in most platforms, on reddit, there are “upvote and downvote” buttons. I once realized that I had fewer upvotes than the last time I checked. I had no idea why someone downvoted me. I wanted to check the downvoted comment but then I realized that on Reddit, you cannot see who downvoted your posts. I think it is also a nice feature of Reddit as it would definitely prevent lots of fights and nemesis activities.

Wow - very cool to see so much discussion around your question! I think maybe it helped that you laid it out so clearly (disclaimer: I read it translated into english so maybe I didn't fully understand it all). Interesting to see the debate around this, which I guess is part of the point of language. The up/down vote features are interesting to think about at both the Q and A levels. I guess in this case maybe your question was more particular than of general interest (?) which may have affected things.
